Accommodations and Meals


Participants will be staying in the Mackin Hall, where each person will have his or her own room with a private bathroom, for about $250 for the week.

Mackin Hall is a five-story building with elevator access facing an open green space. It is close to parking, dining, and classrooms. NEH summer Scholars will each be given their own room, although these rooms are furnished as doubles. Each room has its own bathroom. Each floor contains a common lounge, and laundry is located on the first floor. Summer scholars are required to bring all of their own linens – including pillows, mattress pad, sheets and towels. While these rooms are spatious, they are college dorm rooms and not hotel rooms. The price for the rooms will be under $50 per night, less than half the price of area hotels.


Meal Plan

The workshop meal plan will cost approximately $225 and covers all meals from Monday dinner to Saturday lunch. This includes catered breakfasts, lunches both on and off site, and dinners on and off site.


Ramapo College of New Jersey, which will serve as the program’s home base, boasts a verdant campus surrounded by beautiful views of the Ramapo Mountains.The 300-acre campus is at 505 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, New Jersey (Bergen County), one mile from the intersection of Routes 17, 202 and 287, and about 40 minutes from New York City.  The campus includes modern academic buildings with state-of-the-art computer centers; a student life building with student offices, cafeteria, entertainment and meeting rooms; a library with electronic research facilities; The Angelica and Russ Berrie Center for Performing and Visual Arts; The Sharp Sustainability Education Center; a historic administration building; and athletic playing fields and lighted tennis courts. Participants will have access to the Bradley Fitness and Recreational Center, which is a short walk from our dorms. The nearby towns of Mahwah, Ramsey, and Suffern host an excellent array of restaurants.
